Aiding and Abetting

It’s been a few weeks at the cabin and Baby Doll is a wreck. She hears on the television and radio that seemingly every able-bodied cop is looking for them. There is a statewide APB out and the District Attorney is vowing they’ll be caught. His brother was the cop Beau shot in the chest and he’s made no bones to the press that when they are apprehended he’ll be seeking the electric chair. The thought of dying in on a cold metal chair scares Baby Doll so bad she practically gives herself paralysis.

Beau, on the other hand, is overflowing with good cheer and shouts at the TV and radio whenever their story comes up. He knows they are very well hidden and the odds of them getting caught are slim. A familiar, worried look falls upon Baby Doll’s face and he reassures her that everything will be fine. He kisses her goodbye, puts on a deer hunting jacket, and announces he’s running out to get food. She waits until she can’t hear the engine anymore and executes a plan she’s been scripting in her mind.

She loves Beau and will always love Beau but she can’t live like this. The fear and anxiety of getting caught has shredded her last nerve and she misses her family so much it’s unbearable. She can’t imagine the shame she has brought on them by being a fugitive and she has to bring this to a close. She calls up a girlfriend who she has known since they were toddlers. Carmen is the only one that didn’t turn her nose when Baby Doll introduced her friends and family to Beau. She understood their love and she didn’t judge.

Carmen has a brother who works for the FBI and after she gets off the phone with Baby Doll she calls him. Over the next 30 minutes Carmen keeps placing calls between her brother, Baby Doll, and a lawyer. The lawyer is another friend and he manages to get the death penalty off the table as long Baby Doll is willing to testify. She’ll still get some jail time but a reduced sentence for her cooperation. When the phone tag finally stops, Baby Doll sits at the kitchen table, lights up a cigarette, tears running down her face but she doesn’t sob. She is sad and relieved.
