Slinking back on the spring-less, dirty mattress in his cell, Beau closes his eyes and he flashes back to the time when they first met. He was working from three towns over, boosting cases of top shelf liquor from a local store owner who moonlights as a degenerate gambler that doesn’t always settle his debts. Valentine’s Day was a Sunday that year and that afternoon looked as if everything was hand polished by the sun.

Beau loved to wind up Nicky and watch him blow his top and their argument was getting louder and louder; attracting attention. As they put the last of the booze into the back of the box truck, Beau noticed a girl staring at them from across the street. She was with a girlfriend and giggling as Beau threw log after log onto Nicky’s fire, adamantly insisting that his Greek girlfriend used to have a beard and she was getting it waxed special for Valentine’s Day. Nicky’s vein on his forehead swelled with tension and Beau looked over at his audience, showman-like. Then it happened.

Beau and Baby Doll’s eyes met and sparks shot through traffic and across the street and for a moment, time stood still. As they regained focus, they examined one another. She wore a flowered dress, an easy smile and a small gold crucifix. He was in workpants, gravity defying hair and a wifebeater. For a second, they both doubted it, “How could I feel this way for this person? Look at them, no way, NEVER!” But they felt it. It was undeniable. They knew right then and there the lives they once knew were changed forever.
