Oblivion
She knew who he was and didn’t care. They were happy. Until they weren’t. In the early days she could get him to take his foot off the gas, slow down and return to her but his monomania soon began to overpower her pleas. He was running off the rails. Drinking and drugging to deal with the stress and cruelly, they always provided him the relief that made him continue his chosen profession. Even the doghouse, where he was frequently residing, was in disrepair. All of her cautions, threats, tough love, went unheeded and he finally did it. He got caught. Their last time spent together he didn’t even say goodbye. To her, it feels like the end of the world. Everyone she knows gets to tell her, “I told you so” and her consolation prize is becoming a jailhouse widow.
