Later that evening when the local Gardenias give a sweet exhale, Beau and Baby Doll and wrestling with their feelings. They can’t stop thinking about each other but they know that love can be dangerous, lacerating, and ultimately heartbreaking. Their thoughts are pacing, wearing a path between their head and their heart, “No way, it will never work. But what if it did? I’ve been waiting so long for something good…” Beau, in his line of work, found that life was easier with no attachments but at the end of one of his drunken flings he couldn’t help but feel hollow. He played a hard man but that was only to protect a fragile heart. He wanted something deeper, someone that could make him drop anchor and stop his endless seafaring. Baby Doll was practically being groomed by the local families in her congregation to be set up with one of the several boring boys that while nice, were about as interesting as concrete. None of them stirred her heart the way just the sight of Beau could. She saw a future with each of them and it painted the same picture: a safe façade that hid an ultimately loveless marriage. Just like her parents. Independently, they arrived at the same conclusion that the risk is worth it.
