about

Valentine’s Day

The jury said he did the crime, now Beauregard Carson is doing the time. His unforgiving bed is permanently fixed to the indifferent, gray wall and his presence makes the cell overcrowded. The overweight guard with chipped front teeth with an enormous bag of bad jokes dipped in of gallows humor doesn’t bother him. The so-called food served in the prison chow hall, so bad even the crows won’t eat it, doesn’t bother him either. Every day, hour, and minute is a gyrating top of emotions, spinning from guilt, sadness, deep seated anger, and murderous rage. Today is different though. Somewhere between the 50 shades of discontent is a romantic hue of red that represents the everlasting love Beau has for his beloved Baby Doll. It’s Valentine’s Day. That’s when they met.

Birthdays and holidays never meant much to either of them as they both came from families they found less than desirable. Perhaps that’s why when they met on Valentine’s Day it was a magnetic pull that felt stronger than fate. Beau and Baby Doll used to go somewhere remote every Valentine’s Day where they could pretend they were the last two people in existence. No matter the heist that was going down, no matter how sour the deal had turned, no matter if he was several states away, strapped for cash or flush with a cigar, a bottle, and a fresh body in the trunk, he would always find a way to find a way back to Baby Doll. Not this time.

Now he is stuck with a glare so intense it practically heats the iron on his metal cage. His muscles tense as he grips the bars and stares out the window and up at the night sky that hums with the electric cycle of the prison yard lights. He closes his eyes and broadcasts his heart to her on all frequencies in hope on this day of all days she’s attuned to his energy. He’s sorry, not for what he did, not enough to change, but that he let her down. The tide always comes back and he knows he will always be the same.
